Everyone speaks Russian, Kazakh, they explain, is struggling to emerge as a national language. ![]() The old gulags, about fifty kilometers away, are vestiges of the tragic past suffered by imprisoned political dissidents in the former USSR. From the airport, a stop at the newly opened Blue Mosque, the largest in Central Asia. The main arteries supplying Nur-Sultan are lined with alternating flags of Kazakhstan, the Holy See and China. Between former Soviet atmospheres and futuristic impulses In fact, a mixture of ex-Soviet atmospheres and Western-style dynamism prevails here. The yurts of the nomadic peoples of the Asian steppes can be found reproduced in front of the Cathedral of the Mother of Perpetual Help, a reminder of that imaginary that in the ultramodern capital of Kazakhstan does not really find a trace, except filtered and recomposed in some of the designs of contemporary buildings that arise in its built area.
